Widely considered the best jazz singer in the world, Kurt Elling has been a frequent collaborator with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra over the past ten years. Drawing on a repertoire that ranges from the Great American Songbook to pop and rock songs by Joe Jackson and King Crimson, with the SNJO Elling has presented programmes including a tribute to Frank Sinatra, the winter celebration Spirit of Light and the philosophically inspired Apparition Bridge.

Born into a musical family in Chicago, where his father was Kapellmeister at a Lutheran church, Elling began singing in choirs at school and went on to learn counterpoint and sing in the classical style. As a teenager, seeing Tony Bennett singing with the Woody Herman Band on television planted a thought that he has brought to fruition spectacularly well.

Having established a productive partnership with pianist Laurence Hobgood, Elling signed with legendary jazz label Blue Note in 1995, releasing six albums, and then with Concord in 2007. He has since recorded albums dedicated to the music of John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman and to the songs created in the Brill Building and formed Superblue with the highly individual guitarist Charlie Hunter.

A Night at the Movies will draw on material that reflects his love of a diverse range of films from different eras of cinematic history.
