The Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival invite you to enjoy new jazz interpretations of two popular classical works: Prokofiev’s Peter & the Wolf and Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals. Scotland’s premier jazz orchestra, the SNJO will perform … “a double bill that combines virtuosity and ingenuity with unadulterated theatricality … in a delightful collision between folk tale and big-band swing …” (***** The Scotsman).
Winning huge critical acclaim, the programme starts with an adaptation of Prokofiev’s “Peter and the Wolf” with a Scots translation by former Makar Liz Lochhead and delivered with eye-rolling loquaciousness by Tam Dean Burn.
In the second set, a jazz re-imaging of Saint-Saëns’s Carnival of the Animals evokes a dizzying, dazzling, zoological roundabout, with pianist, Pete Johnstone traversing classical and jazz genres with the SNJO “…at full power…Full of wit… and they swung. Hugely entertaining” (On The Beat).
