Nordic jazz has many heroes, and foremost among them are bassist Arild Andersen and drummer/percussionist Paolo Vinaccia. Admired as pre-eminent jazz masters, both are associated with impressive jazz music that exploits overlooked possibilities and here they collaborate with Tommy Smith and the SNJO to tell new and original jazz stories spun around mystical Norse legends.

Imaginations will run riot as Thor swings his famous hammer and Odin’s thunder rolls high above the roof of Valhalla. Scandinavian jazz increasingly incorporates folk elements from Norse music and this is a phenomenon that is often reflected in Scottish jazz whilst Scottish folk music also shares some Norse heritage.

This exciting project demonstrates that startling new music is just waiting to be discovered, created, heard and shared.
