We’re thrilled to announce that the Tommy Smith Youth Jazz Orchestra (TSYJO) has been renamed the Scottish National Youth Jazz Orchestra (SNYJO)! This important change marks a new chapter for Scotland’s premier youth jazz ensemble as we continue to champion the next generation of exceptional Scottish jazz talent.

The Scottish National Youth Jazz Orchestra showcases talent, skill, exuberance, and verve in every performance, bringing together the high flyers from Scotland’s tremendous wave of young jazz musicians. As the youth wing of the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO), SNYJO provides access for gifted young jazz musicians to develop and perform regularly in an exceptional big band environment. Founded in 2002, the orchestra was created to compete with fee-paying organisations whilst offering a place where talented musicians could be part of a first-class ensemble completely free of charge—because all you need is your skill.

Our “free for all” policy ensures no barriers to participation. We cover all travel, accommodation, and meal costs, making membership truly accessible based solely on ability to play rather than ability to pay. Members enjoy big band rehearsals, live performances, studio and live recordings, collaborations with special guest artists, and invaluable mentoring from SNJO professionals.
